This fall, MLMIC and the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons (NYSSOS) will host a number of statewide events designed to educate orthopaedists and the patient care team including physician extenders, anesthesiologists, nurses, risk managers and orthopaedic practice managers. These events will address the risks associated with nerve injuries in joint replacement surgical cases in the office, surgical and postoperative settings.
Live lectures will be held on the following dates:
- October 2, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Syracuse
- October 3, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Albany
- October 16, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Buffalo
- October 17, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Rochester
- November 7, time to follow, NYC
- November 13, time to follow, White Plains
- November 20, time to follow, Garden City
Additionally, MLMIC and NYSSOS will air podcasts in November and December that include case studies focused on nerve injuries resulting from hip and knee surgery. Additionally, a webinar will be presented on December 5 at 7:30 p.m.
These educational opportunities focus on preventing nerve injuries that stem from joint replacement surgery and will:
- provide guidance on appropriate patient selection to improve outcomes;
- empower healthcare organizations to enhance the patient experience and obtain benchmark performance;
- enable orthopaedic surgeons to reduce complications, thereby decreasing rates of nerve injury associated with total joint replacements; and
- bridge the gap between institutions and providers by recognizing and sharing best practices.
Participants will learn strategies for:
- documenting the pre-operative, operative, post-operative phases to mitigate risk;
- limiting allegations of a lack of informed consent;
- disclosing unanticipated outcomes;
- facilitating prompt follow-up care for suspected nerve injuries to improve patient outcomes from such events;
- handling patient noncompliance; and
- enhancing communication between physicians, patients, staff and facilities.
