MLMIC is Proud to Support the Foundations of Insurance Program
Empowering the Next Generation of Healthcare Liability Insurance Leaders
MLMIC, New York’s leading medical professional liability insurer, and MedPro Group, a national leader in healthcare risk management and insurance solutions, today announced a continuation of their collaboration with St. John’s University to enhance the education of future healthcare liability insurance professionals. Through this partnership, MLMIC and MedPro provide educational resources and expertise to St. John’s University students who are educating themselves on the insurance industry. The program focuses on critical topics such as risk management, underwriting, marketing, analytics and claim handling.
Michael Schoppmann, Esq., CEO at MLMIC is proud of the organization’s involvement with the program. “We are excited to partner with MedPro and St. John’s University to provide valuable educational opportunities for healthcare liability insurance professionals,” Schoppmann stated. “By equipping students with a strong understanding of risk management principles, we can help them to deliver high-quality care and avoid potential pitfalls.”
“It’s been tremendously exciting to see students progress from an informational meeting to participation in FOI to summer internships to full-time positions in the insurance industry,” said Julia Hersey, Training and Development Specialist at MLMIC, who understands the rewarding experience between professional and student. “The students learn from us and from each other, and we learn so much from them. Connections are made, friendships are forged and professional lives are shaped.”
Bob Beaudet, Director, Career Services – Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University, appreciates the connection between the professional and student within the program.
“What truly distinguishes the FOI is the deep and personal concern each MedPro and MLMIC professional has for the students,” Beaudet noted. “FOI clearly explains the wide variety of insurance careers. Internships opportunities exist and careers in insurance are launched. But, most importantly, relationships are built and the students are developed and grateful for the opportunity to participate. I am extremely grateful for all that MLMIC and MedPro have done for St. John’s University and look forward to continuing this great partnership.”
“Joining the FOI program has been one of the best decisions I’ve made,” said Rhona Castanheiro, St. John’s University student / program participant, who looks back at her experience in the program with great fondness. “It opened my eyes to the various opportunities within the insurance industry, especially in fields like cybersecurity, which isn’t something you’d initially think of when you see insurance. Throughout my internship with MLMIC, I had the chance to connect with professionals who were always willing to answer my questions and encouraged me to explore freely, and I’m truly grateful to have been part of this program as a student, ambassador and intern.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the program, and it brought to light many intriguing careers in insurance. The panelists provided a wealth of useful information, and the employee-led sessions were incredibly insightful. The opportunity to analyze my personality strengths and weaknesses using DISC assessments has provided me with important information I can use to develop myself further,” said Madison King, graduate of St. John’s University and University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, who made valuable connections while participating in the program. “The connections I was able to make through the program opened up many opportunities for me, and I am extremely grateful to have been a part of the program.”
