MLMIC Insurance Company, in collaboration with MedPro Group and Candello, is pleased to introduce our Cardiology Claims Data Snapshot.

This publication provides insights into the clinical and financial severity of cases in which cardiology and interventional cardiology are identified as the primary responsible services. Data for the analysis was collected from cases initiated between 2012 and 2021.

This analysis examines allegations and contributing factors, including human factors and healthcare system flaws that result in patient harm. While there are several contributing factors in cardiology claims, the most common factors include:

  • clinical judgment relating to patient assessment, selection and management of therapy, patient monitoring, failure/delay in obtaining a consult, failure to ensure patient safety, choice of practice setting, failure to question/follow an order and practicing beyond your scope of practice;
  • communication among providers, between patient/family and providers, via electronic communication such as texting or email and telehealth/tele-radiology; and
  • documentation including content, insufficiency and mechanics of documentation.

This study provides comparisons in contributing factors nationally and throughout New York State, as well as an analysis of the most common drivers of clinical and financial severity. It also contains stories reflecting allegations and contributing risk factors driving cases brought against cardiologists and includes risk mitigation strategies to address these issues.
