Need to Know: Change in NYS Public Health Law
Recent changes to New York Public Health Law §2803-(i)(9) and §2803(t) provide new requirements for hospitals caring for visually impaired patients. Effective October 20, 2014, facilities must provide all visually impaired or blind patients with both pre-admission information and discharge instructions in either a large print format or, if requested by the patient/personal representative, an audio recording of this information. The audio recording may be a CD or an electronically transmitted digital file.
MLMIC recommends that documentation be placed in the patient’s medical record noting the manner in which the information was provided to the patient or the patient’s representative in order to demonstrate compliance with this new law.
