New Risk Management CME Module: Back Disorders
We are pleased to announce that the latest addition to MLMIC’s series of Risk Management CME Modules is now available online. In “Back Disorders: Claims Data in the United States,” the issues and risks associated with the diagnosis and treatment of back disorders are explored in detail. Topics addressed in the program include:
- proper patient selection for spine surgery and the factors to consider when choosing surgical candidates;
- information that should be provided to the patient and documented in the record when obtaining informed consent; and
- strategies to reduce the risk of patient injury during spine surgery and subsequent malpractice claims.
An interview is conducted with an expert neurosurgeon and an experienced MLMIC Claims Assistant Vice President. Pertinent risk management issues are addressed, including errors in diagnosis, injuries alleged in malpractice claims, improper performance of a procedure, failure to recognize a complication, the use of prescription medication and documentation.
