MSSNY and MLMIC Partner to Provide Physician Wellness Support
MLMIC has partnered with The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) in its effort to provide New York State physicians with resources and support to address mental health challenges resulting from today’s medical environment. In addition to standard job pressures, the pandemic has exacerbated demands facing physicians, resulting in a burnout crisis with many experiencing symptoms like depression, anxiety, emotional distress, worry and behavioral changes.
To support physicians as they address these difficulties, MSSNY, with the support of MLMIC, has compiled a comprehensive list of materials, support mechanisms and advocacy initiatives which, as outlined on their website, will help alleviate universal stress and burnout throughout the medical community. Additionally, a peer to peer component offers physicians, residents and medical students the opportunity to discuss life stressors with fellow medical professionals who can relate to their experiences, listen without judgement, share positive coping mechanisms and provide guidance on obtaining necessary treatment.
“Today’s climate has had a lasting impact on physician wellbeing and, as an advocate for the healthcare community, it’s critical we provide our physicians with a strong support system and resources to cope with stress-related symptoms and conditions,” says MLMIC CMO, John Lombardo, MD.
MLMIC advises physicians and other providers to pay attention to the signs of distress not only as individuals but also as colleagues and to seek support whenever necessary. Policyholders are encouraged to review Strategies for Managing Physician Mental Health Problems Caused by the Pandemic, a blog post highlighting important Joint Commission guidance for addressing mental health concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, those with questions and concerns related to their mental health are advised to call the Physician Support Line. The free hotline offers supportive therapy to help healthcare employees manage stress that is or is not linked to the pandemic. Services are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. Eastern Standard Time by calling 1-888-409-0141. No appointment is necessary.
Policyholders also have access to MLMIC’s toll free 24/7 Legal Hotline: (855) FAKS-LAW (1-855-325-7529). Our experts are available to help you address the challenges that may arise as you continue to care for patients throughout the nationwide response to this coronavirus pandemic.
