Pressures in Medical Field Limit Time Clinicians Have to Consider Diagnoses
Diagnostic errors are a significant driver of malpractice claims against hospitals and healthcare providers. Diagnostic reasoning is a critical skill which may be influenced by the complex and often chaotic environment in which physicians and other healthcare providers must reach a diagnosis.
Identifying factors that influence the decision making process involved in making a diagnosis may provide opportunities to develop strategies to reduce or prevent errors. Providing physicians with more “thinking time” and a space for decision making without distractions may assist them in determining the appropriate diagnosis.
MLMIC supports efforts by researchers and clinicians alike to find ways to reduce diagnostic errors in the practice of medicine. Our newest online CME program explores a high-exposure liability case in which diagnostic error was a factor.
